How to get the highest-resolution thumbnail a video actually has, and what to do when HD is missing.
The short answer, then the caveat that matters.
Quick answer
- Copy the video URL.
- Paste it into the thumbnail downloader and press Get Thumbnails.
- Download Max Resolution HD (1280×720) if it is available; otherwise take the largest size that is.
The caveat
1280×720 only exists when the video was uploaded in 720p or higher. For older or low-resolution uploads, YouTube never generated it, and requesting it returns a small grey placeholder rather than an error. A tool that checks availability first will tell you; one that does not will hand you the placeholder.
JPG or WebP
WebP is typically much smaller at the same visual quality and is the better choice for anything going on the web. JPG is the safer choice for older software. Availability can differ between the two formats for the same video.
Before you reuse it
Thumbnails belong to their creators. Reference, research and commentary are generally fine; republishing someone else's thumbnail as your own is not.
